hey there, babydoll, come with me to the bathroom stall

Whoa, y’all.  Scandalicious.  At the beginning of the week, radio station scuttlebutt had it that some employee of KMTT, The Mountain had done something freakishly out-of-character that had landed him in serious legal trouble.  That was all the information I could get at the time, aside from the fact that the story would soon be broken by The Stranger.  My gossip yearning far from slaked, I thirsted for more.  Yeah, you heard me, I said “slaked.”  I read Interview With The Vampire in the 5th grade just like you did.   I text’d an acquaintance, Rachel over at KEXP (yes, the Rachel mentioned in the article), to see if she could give me the scoop.  When she declined to respond, I thought huh, either she a) knows something, but can’t tell me, b) doesn’t know anything but also doesn’t like me, thus explaining her lack of reply, or c) knows something, but can’t tell me and also doesn’t like me.  When The Stranger finally posted the article last night, revealing that the DJ in question was popular hipster Matt Nichols who also has a gig at KEXP, I realized that it had been a).  Well, theoretically, it could have been c), but let’s just stick with a) for now.  I felt pretty bad for totally seeking the scoop from Rachel, since she knows the guy and might even be friends and all—plus, the atmosphere over at the station must be fucking ripe right about now.

Yeah.  But how do you deal with that sort of thing?  I mean, I’ll Xander right now—I’m gonna take a stand and say that domestic violence is not good, bad, in fact, very bad.  And I seem to have confirmation that he did, in fact, beat hell out of his girlfriend, I mean, he’s not contesting these facts and hopefully not going to try and use drunkenness as an excuse.  Yeah, but let’s just say that this guy is your friend and he also works for you—what do you do?  KMTT has fired the guy outright and he’s on some sort of administrative leave from KEXP.  I mean, clearly, keeping him on board is fucking awful PR, but how do you handle a situation like this, especially if he’s a guy who, by all accounts, was well-loved by his co-workers.  The behavior is completely indefensible, but as his friends, I bet the urge to support him is overwhelming.

As it stands, I don’t know the guy and I say kick his girlfriend-abusing ass to the curb, but hey, that’s just me.  It’s a kind of a useless question, though, to fire or not to fire, really, because if charges are pressed and all, he’s going to PRISON.

Just for arguments (or flamings) sake I'll take the tact that domestic abuse is proof modern society teaches women to be passive victims. Where is the mace? The kitchen knife? The self defense plea? The real crime here is not that she got beaten it's that she was unable to prevent it.

We'll, let's keep in mind that he's bigger and stronger...and was fueled by drunken rage. And then he ran off before she could stab him with a bread knife.

I still can't believe you straight to Rachel with the top secret, super confidential information I gave to you! Jerk. :P

Bigger? Stronger? What kinda cop-out is that? Did Bruce Lee worry about these thing? I can hear it now "But he's a trained Martial Arts badass." and? What does size and strength have to do w. ripping folks ears off? Or bending their fingers the wrong way? But let's not get into the physical side of things. Why did all this start? Is there a history there? People beating on other people because the first people have small man-parts (which I suspect is the case here) is despicable. But if you are not willing or capable of defending yourself (by defending yourself I mean not being there for the beating) then it will happen. This d00d was mad? This chick that got beat on wasn't? Maybe she should have been. Terrible shit. No argument there. It just bothers me to see folks take what is handed out to them as tho they had no other options.

Don't be a fucking idiot. You have no valid argument, situational or otherwise. If by "defending yourself" you mean "not being there for the incident," I'm sorry, was she supposed to anticipate that her longterm, previously non-violent boyfriend was going to turn on her in a drunken fit? Oh, and after she was suckerpunched and kicked, was she supposed to be angry and vengeful instead of surprised and badly injured? And had there been a history os spousal abuse, can we judge her for not leaving him earlier, especially given the implications of Battered Wife Syndrome? Way to blame the victim, asshole.

Thanks Avi, that was the sort of response I was anticipating ;-)

the sensitive act gets him laid, so don't mock, jonas.

I'm not mocking him (dammit). That really is the response I was expecting.

all right, back to your corners, ladies.

Whoa. You read Interview With The Vampire in FIFTH grade? I was still reading Judy Blume at that point. Pretty scandalous, dude. Also, wife-beating is fucked up.

didn't everyone read that book in middle school? 5th and 6th grade were my years of sexy books. Like the entire Stephen King canon. i was a little traumatized by the fact that that one girl in It had sex with all her little friends. stephen king is a sicko.

also, i shared a bookshelf with an older sister and was constantly borrowing books that were, perhaps, out of my age range.

I didn't get around to it until 9th grade so I guess I was a late bloomer. I WAS sneaking looks at "The Joy Of Sex" from age 5 on. But then again, wasn't everyone?

So you're a judge and jury? "I have confirmation that he did, in fact, beat hell out of his girlfriend." I see, so you were there that night? What, so you catch some gossip from someone who may or may not "know" him and read a carefully constructed, yellow journalistic turd in the Stranger (who just froths at the mouth over stories of violence and misery, whether they're accurate or not), and you're got confirmation? Sorry, but you don't got shit, Mr. Blogger.

well, technically, you don't know what i "got" or don't "got," matt, or who i know or don't know or who or what my source is. but you are right, everything i do have is hearsay, since i didn't talk to the guy myself. i don't really consider one degree away from the source to be "shit," though. if you have any information you'd like to contribute, though, to clear up the news and police information on the events, i'd be glad to hear it. i am willing to give the guy the benefit of the doubt. if you're just sounding off, though, and your information is as far removed from the souce as mine is, though, then i'm not really interested. also, it's "ms. blogger" to you...

My Mistake, Ms. Blogger.

No offense, but I *do* consider one degree away from the source to be "shit," especially considering the conclusions you draw as "fact." Meanwhile you appear to love it just as much as the Stranger does. "Scandalicious?" The man has been tried and hanged in the court of public opinion, and your bloodthirst (slaked yet?) simply contributes to that.

For whatever it's worth, I do know the man and have talked to him. And anyone who does really know him knows that the article in the Stranger was misleading, unnecessary and destructive. And yes, I do know what your sources are since you cite them both in your original post (you seem to imply now that you've read the police report... is that true?). It's not my place to comment on the events of that evening. But based on the condemning tone of your post and others that follow it, I would have been remiss in failing to mention that he has not been convicted of anything, and yet has had his life and livelihood shattered long before he's had his day in court.

well, again, you don't know who or what *all* of my sources are, since i considered some of them to be sensitive--if you really are a player in this situation, i'd be happy to discuss them with you off the boards. also,as a sidenote, i named rachel at kexp and i'd like to point out to anyone reading that she in no way gave me any information on this topic. she kept mum, that girl did and good on her for it. regardless, i appreciate your point of view and i will keep my eyes open for any forthcoming information. a question, though--you claim to know the man and you say that Feit's article is "misleading, unnecessary and destructive" and yet you offer no explanation for this. are the allegations false? did nichols not abuse his girlfriend? hey, maybe she hit him first, i really don't know, not having been there, but maybe you can shed some light on the subject, seeing as how you know way more than i do. do you know his girlfriend as well? have you spoken with her about this?

and for the record, everyone, i do love it. he is a public figure and it is scandal and i like to spout off about such things--i would have preferred that it had been someone reprehensible like rush limbaugh, but hey, us gossip-mongerers take what we can get, right? let's not lose sight of the fact that this is a fucking weblog--an online journal, not the NYT and i can basically say whatever the fuck i want and express any opinion i choose. and this is my choice. the information i have leads me to believe that nichols abused his girlfriend. if anyone can point me to a source where it verifies that he did not or that there were extenuating self-defense type circumstances, i'd love to hear it.

again, though, thanks, matt, for your information, i really appreciate that you're cool, logical and coherent because i've had to erase a couple of freak posters who were so passionate about this that their comments consisted of such gems as "what do U know, asshole!" and "i know mike didn't do this because i listen to his show al [sic] the time."
